Polished concrete floors: Procedures and benefits.

We’ve heard quite a lot about polished concrete floors and how they’re all the rage right now. However, not much has been given into how they work or what makes them so popular.
Here’s a simple and straight exposition for you:

The polished concrete procedure

Here’s a simple, step-by-step process that goes into making polished concrete flooring:

  • 1. Usually, the first thing that needs to be done is to prepare the surface through grinding. The concrete surface itself needs to be prepared by taking out any existing coatings; a process that can be carried out with the use of a diamond abrasive measuring about 16 to 20 grit.
  • 2. If you have cracks or joints on the concrete surface, then you will need to seal them with epoxies or fillers
  • 3. When it’s sealed, the surface can be ground with diamond abrasives. The grit you use could measure between 30 and 40. Then, you use a metal-bonded diamond grinding of 80 grit.
  • 4. After all that grinding, the surface can be made dense with a chemical hardener
  • 5. You polish the concrete with a resin bond diamond that has grit between 100 to 200. However, you could combine both.
  • 6. The next polishing is done with a 400-grit, as well as an 800-grit resin bond diamond
  • 7. The last finishing round is performed with a 1500 or 3000 grit resin bond diamond
  • 8. It’s also important to have a coat of stain guard over the surface to maintain it.

  • The benefits of polished concrete floors

Undoubtedly, the most significant benefit that polished concrete flooring has is the fact that it’s cost-effective. When you consider cost per square foot, polished concrete flooring is much more acceptable than having tiles or even carpets.

You also need to remember that a polished concrete floor is smooth and non-porous; factors which will prevent issues such as staining and dusting. They also make the floor easy to maintain, unlike a lot of other flooring options that could be porous and difficult to keep.

Polished concrete flooring also makes for ease of maintenance; especially if you’re considering a floor that will be useful for private facilities. They’re easy to clean, and they hold their own against heavy use and foot traffic. You also don’t need to worry about coatings or waxes, as well as the time and labor required to have them applied.

With polished concrete flooring, you also get the benefit of high reflectivity, which is great for public spaces that ant to project a clean and bright aesthetic (hotels, car dealerships, offices, restaurants, etc.) Polishing provides greater shine, thus making polished concrete a proper alternative to granite for businesses that won’t be able to afford granite or marble floors but still want to have a vibrant, mirror-like finish to their floors.
